Residential Mailboxes
Mail to Virginia Tech residence hall students is delivered to a numbered, locked mailbox. Some residence halls have mailboxes located in the buildings. Other residence halls have mailboxes located in another residence hall serving adjoining residence halls.
Mailboxes are assigned to each student by Housing and Residence Life. The mailbox number is the same number as the residence hall room number. Please contact Housing and Residence Life directly regarding a lost or stolen mailbox key. Please follow Residential Mail Procedures when sending mail.
Please contact Residential Mail Services at 1-4085 or mailservices@vt.edu if you have any questions about residential mail services.
Delivery and Pickup
Mail is delivered to residence hall mailboxes Monday through Friday. Please include the student's full name on any mail or packages since there are two students assigned to each residential mailbox. If the student's full name is not included in the address, the mail or package will be returned to the sender. Packages can be claimed at 23 Owens Hall during business hours. Outgoing mail is picked up daily from the mailrooms and must be deposited by 1:00 p.m. to assure that it is delivered to the U.S. Postal Service that day. Mail recieved after 1:00 p.m. will be processed the following business day.
If you are receiving a packing that is too large for your mailbox via the United States Postal Service (USPS), Mail Services will send an email to your vt.edu email account notifying you of the arrival of your package. You will then be able to pick it up at the Owens Package Room Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
If your package is coming through UPS or FedEx, it will be delivered directly to your room.
Additionally, Mail Services will no longer accept and sign for any item that express carriers are unable to deliver directly to a student. Please suggest to your family and friends that they ask about delivery policies prior to selecting a carrier.
Residential Physical Addresses
Each Virginia Tech residence hall has an individual nine digit (ZIP + 4) code. The first five digits of each residence hall is 24060 and the last four digits are unique to each residence hall. To expedite delivery, please do not include "Virginia Tech" in the address.

Change of Address
The university maintains several different addresses for residence hall students: local, permanent, and guardian. These addresses come from the application for admission. For residence hall students, Division of Student Affairs will update and maintain the local (residence hall) address. It is the responsibility of each residence hall student to update and/or change your address (except for residence hall addresses) by accessing Hokie SPA as soon as possible after the new address is available.
Housing and Residence Life will reset the local address to the permanent address at the end of spring semester and when a residence hall student moves off campus during the academic year. Residence hall students, who move off campus after their freshman year, must change their address by using Hokie SPA; otherwise the permanent address will be considered the local address for all university mailings.
